We report the observation of a polyatomic cluster constituent, fluorin
e in this case, recoiling from the projectile upon impact with a surfa
ce. The clusters (NaF)(n)Na+ (n = 1, 2, and 4), PF6-, BF4-, and SiF5-,
with incident kinetic energies of 12-28 keV, were impacted on Au, SiO
2, and alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid targets. The Au surface gave
the highest F- yield when compared to the ''light'' SiO2 surface, for
the same incident cluster. This supports previous MD predications of
polyatomic cluster constituents ''splashing'' upon impact with a surfa
ce. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
