Clathrin-coated vesicles have provided the best example illustrating h
ow both soluble and membrane proteins are selectively clustered into a
transport intermediate for subsequent delivery to another intracellul
ar compartment. Like cytosolic clathrin adaptors, the adaptor-like com
plex AP-3 binds to specific membranes and selects membrane proteins by
interacting with their sorting signals.
