Combined with a collimated atomic beam source, diode laser without ext
ernal cavity has been used as a spectroscopic light source to study at
omic hyperfine structures and isotope shifts of Ba I. Spectroscopic me
asurements of the 6s(2) S-1(0) - 6sGp P-3(1) transition of Ba I have b
een carried out. All hyperfine peaks of Ba-135,Ba-137 have been clearl
y seen and resolution of 50 MHz has been attained. Hyperfine constants
A and B of the P-3(1) state of Ba-135,Ba-137 have been determined. Is
otope shifts of stable Ba isotopes have also been measured. From the m
easured isotope shifts, the 6s electron density at the nucleus has bee
n deduced to be 76.4(53) a.u. and discussed in terms of the Hartree-Fo
ck approximation.
