Abstract
In order to control the superheat in the tundish for the casting of hi gh carbon steels, Sollac has equipped its bloom easter with a plasma t orch. After installation and reliability testing, the rate of power ac tually transferred to the liquid steel was determined. By combining me asurements and model calculations, it was possible de derive the therm al balance and the heating efficiency of the plasma. This leads to an industrial process for the optimum use of plasma heating.
