Abstract
This paper describes the aerodynamic vibration characteristics of both fullscale cables of cable-stayed bridges and the cable models in the wind tunnel tests. The wavelet analysis is applied in order to clarify the nonstationary characteristics of cable vibration and the mechanis m of the low frequency component of vortex shedding and lift force flu ctuation. Furthermore, the cable with elliptical thick plates being pr oposed, the suppressing mechanism against the galloping instability is also investigated. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
