Excited states of K-42 and K-43 were investigated using the reactions
Be-9(S-36,(2)np)K-42 and Be-9((36)S(2)np)K-42. Three methods of select
ive gamma-ray spectroscopy were employed: recoil-nuclei-gamma, proton-
gamma, and gamma-gamma coincidence measurements. Thirty-eight electrom
agnetic transitions were observed originally, 22 belonging to K-42 and
16 belonging to K-43. Eight new levels are suggested for K-42 and fou
r for K-43. Shell-model calculations were performed in the (sd)(-1)(fp
)(3) space to obtain negative-parity states of K-42 and (sd)(-1)(fp)(4
) space for positive-parity states of K-43. The calculated energies ar
e in good agreement with the experimental values, but some systematic
differences indicate that the collectivity of the actual levels is not
completely accounted for by the configuration space used in the calcu
lations.
