The French A16 guide developed at CEA Saclay proposes a methodology to
estimate the stress and strain in the vicinity of the crack tip and a
criterion to assess crack initiation by using these local parameters.
A worked example for a CT specimen is developed and the results are c
ompared with finite element analysis. Both calculation methods have th
eir specific material behaviour models. In this text, the finite eleme
nt constitutive model is presented. The material coefficients needed f
or the A16 guide are then determined by means of numerical simulation
on smooth specimens.
