K. Naruse et al., MESANGIAL CELL ACTIVATION IN THE COLLAGENOFIBROTIC GLOMERULONEPHROPATHY - CASE-REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE, Virchows Archiv, 433(2), 1998, pp. 183-188
Collagenofibrotic glomerulonephropathy is a new disease entity of unkn
own pathogenesis, which is characterized by the deposition of type III
collagen within the mesangial matrix. We have investigated a case in
which many mesangial cells in the type III collagen-deposited glomerul
i were alpha-smooth muscle actin (ASMA) positive and showed an increas
e of subplasmalemmal filaments, indicating the activation and myofibro
blastic transformation. It is suggested that the activated mesangial c
ells may synthesize the type III collagen deposited in the subendothel
ial space and mesangial matrix.
