The solubilization of six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) by be
ta-cyclodextrin and carboxymethyl-beta-cyclodextrin(CMCD) has been inv
estigated. The presence of beta-CD and CMCD greatly enhance the solubi
lity of PAHs in water. The solubilization effect of cyclodextrins is c
aused by formation of inclusion complexes of PAHs with cyclodextrin. T
he degree of solubilization power is related to the ''fit'' of PAH str
ucture within the cavity of beta-CD or CMCD. The better the fit of the
molecule, the greater the solubilization power. beta-CD shows higher
solubilization power than CMCD at low concentration. (C) 1998 Elsevier
