The essential oils of Cistus albidus leaves growing wild on calcareous
and siliceous soils in Provence (South of France) were analysed by GC
and GC-MS. The major component, for both oils, is alpha-zingiberene (
116.5-5.2 mu g mu d(-1)), and differences in essential oil composition
between the Cistus populations from the two soil types, as well as th
e chemotaxonomic aspect of alpha-zingiberene accumulation, are discuss
