This article examines trends in the latter port of the 20th century in
intervention research designed to support caregivers of chronically i
ll, older adults. The article focuses primarily on the work of Toselan
d and colleagues but also reviews other selected caregiver interventio
n research studies. The aims, content, methodology, and outcomes of st
udies conducted over the past two decades are reviewed and analyzed. T
he article also discusses which trends in caregiving intervention rese
arch are likely to continue into the 21st century and suggests promisi
ng avenues for future research.
