Lauryl, hexyl, and succinoyl derivatives of collagen have been synthes
ized using lauryl/hexyl aldehydes and succinic anhydride as reactants.
After chemical characterization, the physicochemical properties of th
ese three collagen derivatives as well as those of the native protein
have been studied. The techniques used were ANS and CF fluorescence, s
urface activity, and surface interaction with monomolecular layers of
phospholipids. Hydrophobicity values of these preparations do not foll
ow the expected order according to their substituents. Lauryl collagen
shows a break point in its surface activity, indicative of the presen
ce of aggregation.
