Twenty paediatric patients with congenital dislocation of the hip were
treated with a modification of the classic technique of Salter's oste
otomy. Along with open reduction and femoral shortening osteotomy, the
resected femoral segment, which measured 10-40 mm in width (mean 16 n
un), was used to stabilize the Salter's osteotomy. The patients were a
ged between 2 and 9 years (mean 3.8 years). After a mean follow-up of
16 months (range 6-60 months) all patients had full bone healing and c
omplete incorporation of femoral bone graft with the acetabulum. No pa
tient had re-dislocation, subluxation or displacement of the graft.
