STRUCTURE OF 2,5-DIPHENYL-3-FURYL-2,5-DIP HENYL-3-THIENYLSULFOXIDE

2,5-Diphenyl-3-furyl 2,5-diphenyl-3-thienyl sulfoxide consists Of a su lfoxide linked to a thienyl and a furyl group, which are each linked t o two phenyl groups. Metabolism and toxic effects of thiophene derivat ives are of great pharmacological interest. The thiophene-sulfoxides a re a new class of reactive metabolites recently described by Mansuy, V aladon, Erdelmeier, Lopez-Garcia, Amar, Girault and Dansette [J. Am. C hem. Sec. (1991), 113, 7825-7826]. The structure of an oxidative rearr angement product of 2,5-diphenylthiophene 1-oxide is described here.
