STRUCTURAL STUDIES OF THE REGIOSELECTIVITY OF BISHYDROXYLATION OF POLYCYCLIC METHYLENECYCLOBUTANOL DERIVATIVES

With tricyclic methylenecyclobutanols as starting materials, the follo wing compounds were prepared and their crystal structures determined: 7,8-dihydroxytricyclo[7.5.0.0(2),(8)]tetradec-1-yl acetate (2) and is- 8,9-dihydroxytricyclo[6.5.0.0(2,7)]tri-dec-2-yl acetate (4). The stere ochemistry at the ring junctions is retained during the reaction. The conformations of these molecules and their hydrogen bonding in the cry stals are discussed. The results of the F-2 and F refinements are comp ared.
