Three small species of Gulella from forests in northern Tanzania are d
escribed as new species. One of the new species, Gulella spinosa, is t
he first Gulella or member of the family Streptaxidae which has been r
eported with a spinal shell. The new species share several conchologic
al characters which have not been reported elsewhere in the genus Gule
lla and they are assigned to a new subgenus, Juventigulella. The main
characters defining Juventigulella are the conical or conical-ovate sh
ell shape, detached aperture and open umbilicus. The subgeneric name r
efers to the superficially juvenile appearance of adult specimens. Gul
ella habibui is designated as the type species.
