Abstract
The central part of the Mg-Al phase diagram was experimentally re-inve stigated. Between the gamma and beta phases only one additional interm ediate phase could be verified. The other phases reported in literatur e may be explained by a commensurate modulation of the gamma phase (ga mma') found recently by electron diffraction. The solubility limit of gamma' near the melting temperature was investigated by wavelength dis persive X-ray spectroscopy. Thermodynamic descriptions for these phase s are proposed.
