A long duration of high-repetition high-duty discharge was successfull
y obtained up to 60 s in a small research toroidal device, current sus
taining tokamak in Nagoya University (CSTN-III), by employing a compac
t pulse width modulation (PWM) invertor power supply. Slow variations
of plasma parameters over the whole duration have been observed. The d
evice has a useful potential for studying a long pulse discharge behav
iour which is one of the critical issues for long or steady-state oper
ation of magnetically confined fusion reactors.
