We have embarked upon the development of a new detection method for un
derground water leakage using a neutron backscattering system. We have
estimated the performance capabilities of such a system using Monte C
arlo simulation. It is indicated that a leak which results in 40% wate
r content in the surrounding soils could be detected at depths of up t
o 40 cm from the surface to the center of the source of leakage. This
new detection system could be useful as a hydrostat of underground wat
er supply in noisy areas such as Tokyo, in place of presently-used hyd
rostats which are based on detection of changes in sound. (C) 1998 Els
