Ml. Helpin et al., ANTIBIOTIC-PROPHYLAXIS IN DENTAL PATIENTS WITH VENTRICULO-PERITONEAL SHUNTS - A PILOT-STUDY, Journal of dentistry for children, 65(4), 1998, pp. 244
There have been no reports in the Literature, documenting dental proce
dures in patients with ventriculo-peritoneal (V-P) shunts. This prospe
ctive pilot study was performed to determine a relationship between de
ntal treatment and infection of a V-P shunt. Children with V-P shunts
were the test subjects. No shunt infections occurred, either during a
three-month control period or during the twelve-month study period. Th
e evidence supports the current empirically based recommendation that
antibiotic prophylaxis for routine dental procedures in children with
V-P shunts is not necessary.
