One-dimensional solitary wave solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili
equation are unstable to long-wavelength transverse disturbances. Here
, the nonlinear development of the instability is investigated. The re
sults depend on the size of the system as well as on the allowed pertu
rbation wavelengths. The analytical predictions are compared with nume
rical simulations. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
