A measurement is presented of the forward-backward asymmetry of the pr
ocesses e+e+ --> ccBAR and e+e+ --> bbBAR at centre of mass energies n
ear 91 GeV. Decays of the Z0 into charm and bottom quarks are identifi
ed using 6507 charged D mesons, reconstructed in the decays D*+/- -->
D0pi+/- --> (K-/+pi+/-)pi+/-, D+/- --> D0pi+/- --> (K-/+pi+/-pi0)pi/- and D+/- --> D0pi+/- --> (K-/+pi+/-pi-/+pi+/-)pi+/-. The c quark a
symmetry on the Z0 peak is measured to be A(FB)c = 0.052 +/- 0.028 (st
at.) +/- 0.012 (sys.). The energy dependence of the asymmetry has been
investigated at energies close to the Z0 peak. Consistency with the p
redictions of the Standard Mode is found. Combining these measurements
with the determination of the asymmetries from semileptonic decays, t
he following results for b and c quarks are found: A(FB)c = 0.032 +/-
0.021 (stat.) +/- 0.015 (sys.), A(FB)c = 0.096 +/- 0.017 (stat.) +/- 0
.008 (sys.), with a correlation coefficient of +0.15.
