Abstract
Factorization relations for rotational inelastic differential cross se ctions and transition probabilities for collisional excitation of rigi d polyatomic targets are discussed within the sudden approximation for the special case of symmetric top molecules. The excitation of initia lly rotating spherical top molecules by electron impact at intermediat e energies is studied in detail and the rotational rainbow structure i s analysed.
