It was recognized in the 1960s that testicular germ cell tumors were c
urable with chemotherapeutic drugs, Since that time, newer drugs inclu
ding cisplatin have increased the cure rate of these tumors to over 80
%, even in patients with metastatic disease. Germ cell tumors also exh
ibit a unique biology and genetics that distinguish them from other so
lid tumors and might contribute to their routine curability.
