Abstract
The acrylic and methacrylic esters of alpha-hydroxymethylbenzoin and a lpha-hydroxymethylbenzoin methyl ether, respectively, are synthesized and thermally copolymerized with methyl acrylate and methyl methacryla te using a chain transfer agent in some cases to control the molecular weight of the copolymers. The products are characterized by H-1 NMR s pectroscopy and UV-absorption spectroscopy. Certain copolymers exhibit ed hyperchromism. The photodecomposition of the copolymers in the pres ence of suitable radical trapping agents shows their potential as phot oinitiators. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
