Libraries are increasingly offering adult literacy services as a part
of their normal operations. For the most part, library schools are jus
t beginning to provide education and training for librarians who work,
or who will work, in adult literacy services in the library. This art
icle briefly discusses the development of adult literacy services, par
ticularly in libraries. It outlines the structure and content of a cou
rse developed at San Jose State University's School of Library and Inf
ormation Science. The course provides adult literacy education for lib
rarians and includes practical training at a library literacy site. Th
e work undertaken by students at several sites is discussed, and feedb
ack from literacy coordinators involved with the course is included.
