P. Fonagy, MOMENTS OF CHANGE IN PSYCHOANALYTIC-THEORY - DISCUSSION OF A NEW THEORY OF PSYCHIC CHANGE, Infant mental health journal, 19(3), 1998, pp. 346-353
This commentary briefly summarizes the model proposed by the Boston Gr
oup and attempts to place it in the context of attachment theory and o
ther integrational attempts between cognitive science and psychoanalys
is. The clinical implications of these ideas are considered, with part
icular reference to therapeutic technique and the role of the therapis
t, as a ''new object.'' Some suggestions for the further development o
f the model are considered, in particular the observational study of t
he therapeutic process, the use of some classical psychoanalytic ideas
such as transference, and the need for using the model to encourage t
echnical innovation in psychoanalysis.
