Rotational coherence spectroscopy has been applied to a structural stu
dy of the N-H ... X hydrogen-bonded complexes carbazole-water and carb
azole-ammonia. The rotational constants measured for these species pro
vide information pertaining to the parameters of this important type o
f hydrogen bond. For both species the results are consistent with a li
near or near-linear hydrogen bond with ground-state N-H ... O and N-H
... N bond distances of 2.955 +/- 0.03 and 3.02 +/- 0.03 angstrom, res
pectively.
