In this work we have investigated the influence of plasticization (i.e
. admixture of low molecular weight additives) on the picosecond range
''fast-dynamics'' of a glass forming polymer, poly(vinyl chloride) (P
VC). We have investigated samples of plasticized and pure PVC by inela
stic neutron scattering and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Althoug
h the suppression of the beta relaxation by the plasticizer could be c
learly verified by dielectric spectroscopy, the neutron scattering spe
ctra did not show any change of the fast-dynamics. Therefore our resul
ts do not support a relationship between the fast-dynamics observed by
neutron scattering and the beta relaxation. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science
