We present a new time-dependent approach far probing the dynamics and
high-resolution spectroscopy of Rydberg systems in the presence of ext
ernal fields. The procedure is based on the extension of a recent deve
lopment of a generalized pseudospectral time-dependent method which al
lows for non-uniform spatial grid discretization, and long-time propag
ation of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation with both high accura
cy and efficiency. The method is demonstrated by a case study of the p
hotoabsorption spectrum of atomic hydrogen in the presence of static m
agnetic fields. Excellent agreement of the time-dependent results with
the high-resolution experimental spectrum is achieved line by line, c
overing both the classically regular and chaotic regimes. (C) 1998 Pub
