The elastic and elastooptical constants of berillium hexaaluminate BeA
l6O10 (BeO . 3Al(2)O(3)), a new orthorombic crystal of the berillium a
luminate (nBeO . mAl(2)O(3)) family, are determined by the method of l
ight diffraction by ultrasound. The elastic constants obtained are use
d to calculate a number of important parameters, such as shear modulus
, the modulus of volume elasticity, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio,
and the Debye temperature. The experimental and calculated data are co
mpared with similar parameters for a sapphire Al2O3 crystal.
