This paper examines the effect of an insulating support which is essen
tial for measuring field strength in the space. Various affecting para
meters were analyzed for a model arrangement of a free-body meter put
on top of a vertical insulating column, such as relative permittivity,
dimensions of the column and the probe (field-sensing electrodes) of
the meter. The paper also presents experimental and numerically calcul
ated results for the output increase of a practical field strength met
er caused by presence of a support. These characteristics were discuss
ed with an equivalent diagram consisting of electrostatic capacitances
and by considering the field distortion caused by the insulating colu
mn.
