Abstract
Using the spin-polarised method it is shown that the collapse of wavef unctions of the 4f(N) shell in free lanthanide atoms for the upper ter ms of the excited 4d(9)4f(N) configuration is completed, not at the be ginning, but in the middle of the lanthanum group. This is the reason for the redistribution between photoionization and photoexcitation pro cesses and for the shift of the giant resonance through the 4d ionizat ion limit when passing over from Eu to Gd.
