Rm. Ferguson et al., HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL FEATURES IN RIVERS, Journal of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, 12(4), 1998, pp. 286-291
From 1986 to 1992 a drainage improvement scheme was undertaken on the
River Blackwater, Northern Ireland, following which the Department of
Agriculture (for Northern Ireland) carried out a programme of fish-hab
itat reconstruction in an attempt to restore the river's depleted stoc
k. Over three hundred sites were refurbished by introducing pools, spa
wning and nursery areas. This paper investigates the hydraulic perform
ance of the refurbished habitats, with particular interest in the roug
hness characteristics of the incorporated features.
