The hydrated compounds MV12O30.7 . nH(2)O were investigated by X-ray p
hotoelectron spectroscopy. The shape and location of the complex core
photoelectron lines V 2p, O 1s and M 3d were analyzed for the xerogels
with different M = Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba. The valency of the vanadium ion
s, which plays an important role in the electrical conductivity of the
xerogels, was studied. The V4+/(V4+ + V5+) concentration ratio calcul
ated from the area of the Gaussian components of the V 2p lines indica
tes that this ratio is similar to 0.1 for all investigated compounds.
The V3+ ions were obtained in the xerogels after cleaving by Arf ions.
