The paper presented did some research on the indoor air pollution due
to integrated garages. For that purpose the health offices Bremen and
Bremen-North investigated organic substances like benzene, toluene and
xylene in 47 selected flats. The measuring was done using passive sam
pling tubes over a period of two weeks. The analysis was carried out i
n an external laboratory by gas chromatography. The results indicate t
hat - dependent on the positions and the dimensions of the garages - i
ndoor air pollution with organic chemicals exists in adjacent flats at
known level. In isolated cases a remarkable decline of the quality of
the indoor air was measured mainly due to the construction of the bui
ldings. Because of the unhealthy carcinogenic potential of benzene pre
ventive precautions for the environmental health are required. There i
s no generally indoor air pollution due to integrated garages. But in
case of a complaint the health offices should check the particular sit
uation. For new constructions adequate ventilation should be a must.
