Abstract
In this paper, after a characterization of a class of bounded Fredholm operators on Banach spaces, we investigate the essential spectra of c losed, densely defined linear operators on L-p, spaces. The obtained r esults are used to describe the essential spectra of one-dimensional t ransport equations with general boundary conditions. (C) 1998 Academic Press.
