De. Vance et al., NEPTUNIUM DETERMINATION BY INDUCTIVELY-COUPLED PLASMA-MASS SPECTROMETRY (ICP-MS), Journal of radioanalytical and nuclear chemistry, 234(1-2), 1998, pp. 143-146
The determination of neptunium-237 (Np-237) traditionally has been per
formed by alpha spectrometry or neutron activation analysis. These met
hods are labor intensive and require several days for completion. Indu
ctively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a possible altern
ative for Np-237 determinations. This paper describes the analytical m
ethod developed for samples that have significant levels of uranium pr
esent. The lower reporting limits achievable by ICP-MS are competitive
with the counting methods, but the real advantage for this laboratory
lies in the lower cost and faster turnaround time provided by ICP-MS.
