In the presence of appropriate amounts of beta-cyclodextrin, the absor
bance(A) of procaine solution at lambda(max) (290nm) increases and the
Delta A appears to have a linear relationship to Cbeta-CD With regres
sion coefficient (r) 0.9987. This paper proposes ultraviolet spectroph
otometry (UVSM) for determining beta-CD The method is based on measuri
ng the increase in absorbance at 290 nm for a procaine solution upon t
he addition of beta-CD solution. Conditions for the UVSM determination
of beta-CD and interference from alpha-CD and gamma-CD have been stud
ied. Meanwhile, to compare with the method, the phenolphthalein spectr
ophotometric(PTSM) experiment has been done with satisfactory results.
