Aj. Black et al., ASPERITY DEFORMATION MODELS FOR EXPLAINING THE MECHANISMS INVOLVED INMETALLIC SLIDING FRICTION AND WEAR - A REVIEW, Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Part C, Journal of mechanical engineering science, 207(5), 1993, pp. 335-353
Tabor (1) has given a physicist's view of research into the basic mech
anisms of friction. In the same vein the present paper gives a review
of the basic mechanisms of metallic sliding friction and wear from a m
echanical engineering point of view. A review of the application of as
perity deformation models in building up wear maps for metallic slidin
g wear which can usefully be read in conjunction with parts of the pre
sent review has been given by Childs (2).
