Abstract
Tabor (1) has given a physicist's view of research into the basic mech anisms of friction. In the same vein the present paper gives a review of the basic mechanisms of metallic sliding friction and wear from a m echanical engineering point of view. A review of the application of as perity deformation models in building up wear maps for metallic slidin g wear which can usefully be read in conjunction with parts of the pre sent review has been given by Childs (2).
