The gamma-decay of excited states in the T-z = 1/2 nucleus Y-79 has be
en observed in the Fe-54(Si-28,1p2n)Y-79 reaction using the PEX array
at the NBI Tandem Accelerator Laboratory. Four seven-element encapsula
ted cluster germanium detectors were operated in coincidence with a ch
arged-particle ball and neutron wall. The transitions assigned to Y-79
are proposed to form a K=5/2(+) band analogous to that in Sr-77,and t
he J((1)) moments of inertia are found to be extremely similar. Compar
ison is drawn between the rotational character of Y-79 and neighboring
Rb and Sr isotopes, in which identical bands have been observed.
