The lifetime tau of the R1 fluorescence line, E-2((E) over bar) --> (4
)A(2) of alpha-Al2O3:Mn4+, has been measured under high pressure condi
tions (up to 107 kbar). The study shows that tau rapidly increases wit
h pressure and that this increase is primarily caused by a rapid chang
ing in the wavenumber of the R1 line, compression rate and refractive
index of the crystal. The presented measurements agree qualitatively w
ith the theoretically predicted increase in tau with pressure.
