Attachment of oxazoline-based hyperbranched macromonomers to a trimesi
c acid core affording trimers of the hyperbranched fragments as well a
s polymerization of the oxazoline groups is reported. Polymerization a
nd copolymerization with 2-phenyl-1,3-oxazoline were investigated for
two macromonomers ((M) over bar(w) = 1 700 and 8 000, respectively), r
esulting in hyperbranched analogs of combburst polymers. Homopolymeriz
ation of the macromonomers yielded a degree of polymerization DP appro
ximate to 15. Hyperbranched trimers and the polyethyleneimines with ap
olar hyperbranched carbosilane side-chains form superstructures in sol
ution and in bulk.
