A fiber optic temperature sensor, for which the changes in modal biref
ringence of a short section of a long birefringent fiber are monitored
remotely, is described. It employs a white light interferometer, whic
h is formed by two concatenated spiral polarization mode couplers. Ane
w method for white light interferometer output signal processing is de
scribed which provides a high accuracy absolute temperature measuremen
t even in discontinuous operation of the sensor. Experimental results
are presented for temperature measurements over a 100 degrees C range
with resolution of 3 X 10(-3 degrees)C. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier
