IMPLEMENTING THE HABITATS DIRECTIVE - VERTIGO ANGUSTIOR JEFFREYS IN WALES

Reporting requirements for species on Annex II of the EU Habitats Dire ctive necessitate comprehensive monitoring to be put in place in order to determine whether Favourable Conservation Status has been achieved . The results of three years' monitoring of a population of Vertigo an gustior in a dune-saltmarsh transition are presented. A sampling progr amme is described which is believed to generate reliable monitoring re sults, however, further autecological work is necessary to identify op timal conditions for sampling in relation to behavioural responses to local weather patterns and to clarify the life cycle of V. angustior.
