This paper presents a review of recent studies on corona effects of po
lyolefin films. It focuses on the mechanism of corona treatment of pol
yolefin films by discussing the chemical and physical changes of this
process and the self-adhesion mechanism. Corona discharge of polymeric
films introduces polar groups into the surfaces resulting in increase
s in the surface energy. This improves substrate wetting and adhesion
characteristics. The main chemical mechanism of corona treatment is ox
idation. Corona treatment can also crosslink surface regions and incre
ase film cohesive strength.
