The standard molal potentials of the cell Cd-Hg/CdSO4(m), glycerol(x)/
Hg2SO4(s)/Hg, has been determined in water and 10, 30, 50 and 70% aque
ous glycerol solutions at five different temperatures from 298 to 318
K and molality of CdSO4 ranged from 0.01 to 0.1 mol kg(-1). Mean molal
activity coefficients at 298 K are calculated. The temperature variat
ion of the standard c.m.f. is used to calculate the standard thermodyn
amic function Delta G degrees, for the cell reaction. The primary medi
um effect of different solvents upon cadmium sulphate and standard qua
ntities for the transfer of cadmium sulphate from the standard state i
n water to the standard state in the respective glycerol + water solut
ions are also calculated and the results are discussed.
