The cell-type-specific expression of three rice genes, GOS2, GOS5 and
GOS9, was studied by mRNA in situ hybridization. Previous northern blo
t analysis revealed that these genes were constitutive, green tissue-s
pecific and root-specific, respectively. In this study, GOS2 transcrip
ts were observed in all leaf cell types. In roots, a temporal and spat
ial expression pattern was noticed. Higher mRNA levels were observed i
n lateral roots, especially in parenchymal cells of the vascular cylin
der. Expression of GOS5 was mainly found in chloroplast-containing cel
ls. For GOS9, significant levels of signal were observed in root and l
eaf sections.
