In this paper it is shown how the approximate evolution of soliton for
ming initial conditions for the Benjamin-Ono equation can be described
completely in terms of an integrable two-dimensional phase-plane syst
em. It is found that there is good agreement between these approximate
solutions and full numerical solutions of the Benjamin-Ono equation,
both in the temporal evolution of the soliton amplitude and in the fin
al soliton state for a wide range of initial conditions. (C) 1998 Else
