Abstract
A spectrophotometric study of the encapsulation of isomeric podands 5a , 5b; 6a, 6b and 7a, 7b by beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins (CDs) has bee n made. The fluorescence spectra of naphthyl podands 5a and 5b in gamm a-CD display a longer wavelength emission at 410 and 414 nn, respectiv ely, indicating the formation of a 1:1 complex. The anthryl (6a and 6b ) as well as phenanthryl (7a and 7b) podands being large for the cavit y of gamma-CD do not show the same kind of encapsulation. However, an enhancement in the intensity of emission is observable in their fluore scence spectra, a characteristic of loose binding of the above podands by gamma-CD.
